Huckleberry is tucked atop a loft in one of Bangalore’s vital roads, the 100 Ft road in Indiranagar. Done up with polished wood, neon-coloured silk upholstery and radiating a cosy aura, the USP of this family-run place is that all the food served here is made with fresh ingredients , most of which is sourced from within 300 km.
The cuisine is easy Mediterranean with a gamut of steaks and chops, wood-fired thin-crust pizzas, lightly sauced pastas and lasagnes, and carafes of wine to wash down the food.
Huckleberry is an experiment in sustainability, says Siddharth, a former investment banker and one of the co-owners. It started as a brick- oven pizza place but the family realised early on just what a big difference fresh and organic ingredients make to the food.
On the back of this knowledge was born Huckleberry, where the food is cooked with only fresh ingredients and holds all the comforting tastes of special items cooked at home.
“We are very aware of the fact that we need to start thinking of the impact every business has on society and the environment. We try and source all our products locally and from vendors who can supply this. For example, the cheese comes from within 10 km of the restaurant, the coffee from Hassan. We are exploring the option of starting an organic farm close to Bangalore that will help provide ingredients for the restaurant.”
In the interest of being environmentally friendly, the pizza boxes at Huckleberry are made using recycled materials.
The top of the box can be torn into four plates so the diner doesn’t have to buy separate paper plates to eat the pizza.  At Huckleberry, they walk their talk.
Oh, and there’s a cute beagle at the front of the restaurant. Almost every diner jumps to the conclusion that the place is named after her. It’s not. She is named Peanut.
Bottomline: A charming place that does a great line of thin-crust pizza.
